I don't have to tell you how crazy this year has been. 2020 has taken a toll on each and every one of us in majorly different ways. Now, finally, we make it to December only to be greeted with more uncertainty.
Whether you are finding solace in the holidays or you are dreading them, remember it is important to take care of your mental health in whatever healthy way you can. Big or small, moments of self-reflection, joy, and release matter.
A few things that have been helping me settle my anxiety lately are: long showers, journaling, talking to my therapist, making lists, lying still and listening to loud music, doing one of Sydney Cummings YouTube workouts, breathing exercises outside, and seeing my rotating computer background.
For a while now I have used wallpapers as a fun and simple way to make me smile throughout the day. Some are photos of sea lions or puppies (because duh!), some are beautiful landscapes (to satisfy the photographer in me), but most are positive affirmations. Things like "Hello Sunshine" or "You have totally got this" or "You will be okay, and it's okay if you are not right now." All year I download fun wallpapers I come across on Pinterest or from the monthly tech backgrounds that Everygirl posts. I save them all to a folder on my
laptop called "Backgrounds" and I set my computer background settings to use a different image from that file as my background every day. That way when I open up my laptop I am greeted with a bright, new, inspirational reminder, quote, or beautiful image.
No matter what happens throughout the day, good or bad, the minute I open my computer I know I always have something to smile about, which can makes a big difference in my day. It's kind of like leaving little notes to yourself on your laptop; you never know what it will be or say - but you know it's always positive and as if a former or future version of yourself is letting you know "Hey, I've got your back."
Look - I'm no doctor, but it's something that works for me.
